2025 Oscar nominations morning has arrived, and among the Hollywood powerhouses recognized this year, who will defy gravity, triumph at the papal conclave, or harvest a bit of gold alongside their Arrakian spice at the 97th Academy Awards? Following several delays amid the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires, the first round of 2025 Oscar nominations were announced live by Wicked and Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang, alongside Bottoms and Saturday Night actress Rachel Sennott. Best Picture contender Emilia Pérez emerged as the most-nominated film of the year with 13 overall nods — and made history in the process, as leading lady and trans trailblazer Karla Sofía Gascón became the first trans woman nominated in any of the Academy's acting categories when she scored her Best Actress honor.  On the supporting side, fellow Emilia Pérez star Zoe Saldaña also earned a nomination for her work in the film, though pop star Selena Gomez's Cannes-winning performance didn't make the cut in Best Supporting Actress. Pardon us, but what the f‑‑‑ is going on with the actress categories at the Oscars? Closely trailing Emilia Pérez are The Brutalist and Wicked, both of which earned 10 nominations — including for stars Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, and Felicity Jones, and Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, respectively. Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures; ROBYN BECK/AFP via Getty; Macall Polay/Searchlight Pictures Widely considered to be a major player in the Oscars race, Edward Berger's drama Conclave showed up in Best Picture and stars Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini scored acting nominations, though the film was curiously left out of the Best Director category, with his nomination slot likely going to A Complete Unknown's James Mangold, who recently made a late-season surge for helming the Bob Dylan biopic. On that note, Timothée Chalamet also earned a nomination for playing Dylan in the film, marking the second Best Actor nod of his career in a category that also includes Sebastian Stan's performance as President Donald Trump in the controversial drama The Apprentice — for which supporting star Jeremy Strong also received a nomination for playing lawyer Roy Cohn. Before the 2025 Oscar nominations announcement, the Academy revealed a handful of industry staples for its honorary honors, including the late musician Quincy Jones and casting professional Juliet Taylor. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will go to Richard Curtis, while the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award will go to the James Bond series' Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The 2025 Oscars telecast — with Conan O'Brien as host — airs Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ABC and Hulu, with the official red carpet presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.
